Few dental procedures cause as much anxiety as a root canal — yet most patients who've had one are surprised by how straightforward and pain-free the experience actually is with a skilled specialist. If you've been told you need root canal treatment in Riyadh, this guide explains exactly what to expect, how much it costs, and why the procedure is nothing to fear.

What Is Root Canal Treatment?
Root canal treatment (also called endodontic therapy) is a procedure to save a tooth that has become infected or severely damaged at the pulp — the soft tissue inside the tooth that contains nerves and blood vessels.
When bacteria reach the pulp through a deep cavity, crack, or trauma, an infection develops. Without treatment, the infection spreads to the surrounding bone and can cause an abscess, severe swelling, or even tooth loss. Root canal treatment removes the infected pulp, cleans and seals the canals, and allows you to keep your natural tooth.
Signs You May Need a Root Canal
- Severe, persistent toothache — especially when biting or applying pressure
- Prolonged sensitivity to hot or cold (lingering more than a few seconds after the stimulus is removed)
- Darkening or discolouration of the tooth
- Swelling or tenderness in the gum near the tooth
- A pimple-like bump on the gum (dental abscess)
- Tooth pain that wakes you at night
Some patients have no symptoms at all — the infection is detected on an X-ray during a routine check-up. This is another reason regular dental visits matter.
Root Canal Procedure — Step by Step
Step 1 — Diagnosis & X-ray
Your dentist takes digital X-rays (and sometimes a CBCT 3D scan) to assess the extent of infection, the number of root canals in the tooth, and the surrounding bone health. This informs the full treatment plan.
Step 2 — Local Anaesthesia
The area around the tooth is numbed with local anaesthetic. Modern anaesthetic techniques mean the procedure itself should be completely painless. If you have dental anxiety, ask about sedation options — we can accommodate nervous patients.
Step 3 — Access & Pulp Removal
A small opening is made in the top of the tooth. Using specialised rotary instruments, the infected pulp tissue is carefully removed from each root canal. The canals are then shaped and cleaned with antibacterial irrigating solutions.
Step 4 — Canal Filling
Each cleaned canal is filled with a biocompatible material called gutta-percha, then sealed. In some cases (active infection), a medicated dressing is placed and the final filling done at a second appointment.
Step 5 — Crown Placement
After root canal treatment, the tooth becomes more brittle. A dental crown is almost always recommended to protect the tooth from fracture and restore full chewing function. This is usually done at a separate appointment 1–2 weeks later.
Root Canal Cost in Riyadh — 2026
Pricing depends on which tooth is being treated (front teeth have fewer canals than back molars) and whether a crown is needed afterward.
| Treatment | Average Cost in Riyadh (SAR) |
|---|---|
| Root Canal — Front tooth (1 canal) | SAR 800 – 1,500 |
| Root Canal — Premolar (2 canals) | SAR 1,200 – 2,000 |
| Root Canal — Molar (3–4 canals) | SAR 1,500 – 3,000 |
| Re-treatment (previously treated tooth) | SAR 2,000 – 4,000 |
| Crown after root canal | SAR 1,200 – 2,500 |
Root Canal vs Tooth Extraction — Which Is Better?
Many patients ask: "Is it worth saving the tooth, or should I just extract it?" Our recommendation is almost always to save the natural tooth if possible — here's why:
- Natural teeth function better than any replacement — implants, bridges, or dentures
- Extraction costs are lower upfront, but replacing the tooth with an implant costs significantly more in the long run (see our dental implants guide)
- Bone loss begins immediately after extraction — an implant or bridge is needed to prevent this
- Your neighbouring teeth can shift into the gap if the tooth is not replaced
There are situations where extraction is the only option — when the tooth is severely cracked below the gumline, or when there is insufficient bone support. Your specialist will advise based on your X-rays.
Recovery After Root Canal Treatment
Most patients return to normal daily activities the same day or the following day. Expect:
- Mild soreness for 2–3 days — managed easily with paracetamol or ibuprofen
- Tenderness when biting on the treated tooth for up to 1 week
- Avoid hard foods on that side until the crown is placed
Severe pain, swelling, or a return of symptoms after a few days should be reported to your dentist immediately.
